The Giardino Bellini (also known by the locals as "Villa Bellini" or "a'villa") is the main recreational and relaxation area for the citizens of Catania. Located in the heart of the historic center, it is the city's primary green lung. Villa Bellini in Catania covers an area of 70,942 square meters and is adorned with various statues, bubbling fountains, well-maintained flowered lawns, and hedges.
Villa Bellini was commissioned by Prince Ignazio Paternò Castello in the eighteenth century. In 1854, it was purchased by the municipality of Catania, which decided to restore it, entrusting the work to the local architect Landolina.
In 1880, the Viale degli Uomini Illustri (Avenue of Illustrious Men) was inaugurated, featuring a series of busts erected on columns representing various important figures in Italian and Catanian history:

Located northeast of Piazza Duomo, in the square of the same name, the Teatro Bellini is the most important theater in Catania, dedicated to the renowned composer born in the city and inaugurated in 1890.
It is a neoclassical building distinguished by its splendid interior hall. After a long history of conflicts over this project, the design by architect Carlo Sada was ultimately chosen. The style of this theater is inspired by the Second Empire style imposed by Charles Garnier with the Paris Opera.

The facade is adorned with ornaments and allegories, featuring an elegant entrance portico.

Piazza Duomo is the main square of Catania, considered by some topographers as the Sicilian interpretation of the "trident" in Piazza del Popolo in Rome. It converges three major thoroughfares of the historic center: Via Etnea, Via Vittorio Emanuele, and Via Garibaldi.
Built after the earthquake of 1693, it underwent a complete renovation in 2008 and still serves as the seat of ecclesiastical and civic power. On the north side, you'll find the Palazzo degli Elefanti or Loggia, housing the City Hall; on the opposite side, the Amenano Fountain, leading towards the characteristic area of the Pescheria (fish market); adjacent to it, Palazzo dei Chierici and Porta Uzeda; and to the east, the dominant Cathedral of Sant'Agata, the city's cathedral, from which the square takes its name. Beneath the street surface lie the remains of the Achilliane Baths.
At the center reigns the famous Elephant Fountain, built by the architect Gianbattista Vaccarini in 1757 and subsequently modified, topped with the renowned "Liotru," a statue of the city's symbol, believed to be of Roman origin.
During daily city life and solemn occasions, Piazza Duomo is the meeting place for the people of Catania.

In other words, if you’re wondering what to see in Catania, rely on our mini-guide and start planning your next trip here.

Let’s start with Mount Etna and its 59,000 hectares of park, the pine forest, black lava surfaces, and smoking craters. Pack something warm, even in August, and don’t miss a visit to the top of the volcano.

Once in the city, the first stop will be Castello Ursino, founded by Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century and now a rich civic museum. As you stroll through the streets of the center, keep an eye on the black and white palaces overlooking large squares. First and foremost, Palazzo Biscari, the most important private palace in Catania and a precious testimony of Sicilian Baroque.

Now, take a break at Villa Bellini to see one of the two oldest gardens and one of the four main parks in Catania.

Finally, visit the Catania Cathedral, in whose marvelous square stands ‘O Liotru,’ the little elephant symbol of the city, and take a walk along Via Etnea, the most important street that stretches for a whopping 3 km.

Do you have a bit more time? It will be well spent if you manage to visit the Pescheria di Catania, the ancient and bustling morning fish market reached by climbing a staircase of volcanic rock.
